As for doubling pay, that would vary by field, no? I certainly haven't doubled my pay as a music teacher by leaving public ed, but with a science or math degree, and also with essay creator I'd bet I could do better outside schools than in. In computer science, she's talking about hiring salary, not long-term - but again, those pesky banks and utility companies want to be paid this month (and again next month too!), not in 5 years when the salary catches up and surpasses the former one.
