Rodeca's light-transmissive and colored polycarbonate facade panels were used to clad a warehouse extension for the Gude GmbH in Oberhausen. The light building elements were used on the facade of the hall as well as on various housings in the truck loading docks.

Design The extension was created by the planning group Mesum in collaboration with architect Wilhelm Bökenkamp.

Special attention was paid to the selection of the facade material. Because the warehouse is located on a major road, it needed to be noticeable without being visually intrusive. The double wall polycarbonate was given a unique color scheme. The two-tone version Duocolor was chosen by the company, with titanium grey on the outside - based on the company logo - and crystal on the inside to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

The panels are made of twin wall polycarbonate, which is a high-impact thermoplastic.

They are resistant to the elements and UV rays, as well as being heat-insulating. Their translucency allows some natural light to pass through the façade, which is a plus. The chosen material, PC 2550-10 Duocolor, has a light transmission of approximately 44% in natural light. The homogeneous light scattering in the storage areas ensures that natural daylight can be enjoyed without glare. The facade appears closed and opaque from the outside.

Polycarbonate is an industrial material that is 200 times more impact resistant than glass.

Because the material does not splinter, it provides an extra layer of protection. Another advantage for the industrial sector is that less than one percent of ultraviolet radiation is transmitted. Wavelengths of up to 380 nanometres are nearly completely stopped in this region. When it comes to UV-sensitive storage goods, this property can be critical.

The Gude GmbH manufactures disposable food packaging and hygiene products from materials such as paper, plastic, aluminum, and groundwood. The panels used to protect the sensitive storage goods from ultraviolet radiation are made of wood pulp.

Temperature and Fire Protection In the new building in Oberhausen, the light building elements serve as an envelope in front of a steel-framed structure.

The building's energy efficiency was a major consideration in the design process. The panels ensure optimal storage conditions and lower energy costs throughout the year, including the winter and summer months.

Because of the multi-layered structure, the facade panels also serve as thermal insulation. The greater the strength of the panel and the greater the number of layers, the better the U-value. The PC 2550-10 panels that were chosen are 50 millimeters thick, have 10 layers, and have nine air chambers. This structure has a heat transfer coefficient of U = 0.90 W / m2K, which is excellent.


In addition to the heat, fire protection played a significant role in the event of an explosion. Keeping flammable materials such as paper or cardboard out of the way is particularly important. In addition to being a flame retardant building material, PC 2550-10 meets the additional requirements of not emitting smoke and emitting flaming droplets.

Design and Construction The twin wall polycarbonate sheet was installed vertically and the length of the twin wall polycarbonate sheet was adjusted to correspond with the height of the warehouse.

It was advantageous that the scope of this measure was limited only by the logistics of transport. The system-related frame profiles were attached to the on-site substructure using a special adhesive. This is achieved by using a multi-layered construction, which results in panels with a low deadweight of only five kilograms per square meter. With the help of Rodeca products, a total area of 1,780 square meters was completed in two months on this project.
