Far Cry New Dawn is a standalone narrative sequel to Far Cry 5 - mmocs - 02-22-2019

Far Cry New Dawn is a standalone narrative sequel to Far Cry 5. Many were disappointed with the ending of the fifth numbered entry in the series, and New Dawn aims to provide closure to that story. Set 17 years after the nuclear war, the remaining survivors aim to rebuild the land of Hope’s County but they are attacked by a band of Highwaymen led by twin sisters Mickey and Lou. You take control of a customised captain of security, and are entrusted with duty of bringing peace to the land.

Past Far Cry games repeatedly flirted with these kinds of moral gray areas, but none have been especially diligent about unpacking the intangible space between right and wrong. Far Cry New Dawn practically mechanizes its indifference. It doesn’t really afford the chance to solve or make problems. It’s only really interested in being a playground for carnage.

New Dawn aims to please the fans who enjoyed Far Cry 5. It brings back co-op again for this sequel. It is the best way to experience the game because it helps to keep redundant and repetitive mission design from feeling boring. The co-op works the same way with the players being bound by the limitation that if one travels too far, the other respawns to their location. Aside from that, you are free to do anything in co-op, drive the vehicles, planes, or boats. Exchange weapons and combine powers to take over outposts and help gather resources. While it’s technically spoilers for the events of Far Cry 5, this information is plastered all off the promotional material, but you’ve been warned: it is 17 years after the bombs fell at the end of Far Cry 5, and the world has survived nuclear winter. Hope County, Montana seems to be thriving, with abundant plant and wildlife with very little of the radiation and other hazards you would expect from a nuclear bomb world. The nuclear fallout has made some plants vibrantly colored, and turned all the deer into creatures that look like albino reindeer, but there aren’t large mutated monsters running around like you would expect in the Fallout series.

As you might expect, it’s your job to stop them, by gathering a small army of rebels, clearing outposts, and blasting as many shirtless vagrants into the ether as physically possible. Along the way, you’ll team up with various right-minded allies who’ll join your cause once you carry out a simple loyalty mission or two, and they’ll even fight side by side with you. It’s the same system you may be used to from Far Cry 5, but it still adds some depth and character to the world.

Sequel or side story, “New Dawn” feels like an overextension of both the story and ideas in “Far Cry 5.” Even as a streamlined experience tweaked to play up its strengths, the formula feels tired and bloated. A trip down memory lane always seems like a good idea, but sometimes it better to leave the past in the past.

I have given up on this Far Cry franchise, with Far Cry 4 have been a disappointment to me. I expect too much from the game but it did not deliver. They hyped so much the product but in the end the games seemed rushed and unstable. Unlike forge of empires and gacha life mini movie, these games feel like Triple A games.
