Their previous films focused on cinephilia and desire, but this new version, as the name suggests, manages ghastliness, a class that Akhtar and Johar have not yet attempted (though neither have Kashyap or Banerjee, essentially), but their earlier works primarily explored darker aspects of human nature. At that moment, it seems appropriate that Phantom Stories opens and closes with shorts directed by Akhtar and Johar, two "fledglings" who help us navigate this world—a normally risky endeavor in a movie about fear.
